Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs fresh or frozen green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for a cheesy twist)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 cup crispy fried onions, divided
- 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
Step 2: Cook the Green Beans
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the green beans and blanch them for 3-4 minutes until they’re bright green but still crisp.
- Drain and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Filling
- In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Stir until smooth.
- If using cheddar cheese, mix it in as well for a rich, cheesy flavor.
Step 4: Assemble the Casserole
- Add the blanched green beans to the soup mixture and toss to coat.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Top with half of the crispy fried onions.
Step 5: Bake the Casserole
- Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes.
Step 6: Add the Final Topping
- Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onions evenly over the top.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the onions are golden and crispy.
Notes
- Use Fresh Green Beans: For the best flavor and texture, opt for fresh green beans. Frozen works in a pinch, but avoid canned beans, which can become too soft.
- Customize Your Seasoning: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or paprika for a touch of heat.
- Make It Ahead: Assemble the casserole up to a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Add the fried onions right before baking.
