For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey if preferred)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: A splash of soy sauce for deeper flavor

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix until just combined—avoid overmixing, as it can make the patties tough.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties about 3/4-inch thick.

Step 2: Cook the Patties

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it with cooking spray or a drizzle of oil.
  2. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps form. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning. Add a splash of soy sauce for an extra savory boost, if desired.

Step 4: Smother the Steaks

  1. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy.
  2. Spoon the gravy over the patties and let them simmer for 5 minutes to soak up the flavors.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Ground Meat: For the juiciest patties, opt for freshly ground beef. A mix of lean and slightly fatty beef works well.
  • Don’t Overmix: Mix the patties just until combined to avoid tough, dense meat.
  • Customize the Gravy: Add a pinch of thyme or rosemary for a hint of herbal flavor.
