Description

This Old-Fashioned Goulash is a classic, hearty meal that’s packed with tender beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich, tomato-based sauce. It’s a comforting, budget-friendly dish that’s perfect for feeding a hungry family. Made in just one pot, it’s easy to prepare and even better the next day!

Ingredients

  • Ground Beef (1 lb) – Lean beef works best.
  • Olive Oil (1 tbsp) – For browning the beef.
  • Yellow Onion (1, chopped) – Adds depth of flavor.
  • Garlic (3 cloves, minced) – Essential for rich, savory taste.
  • Diced Tomatoes (1 can, 15 oz) – A classic base for the sauce.
  • Tomato Sauce (1 can, 15 oz) – Thickens and enriches the dish.
  • Tomato Paste (2 tbsp) – Enhances the depth of flavor.
  • Beef Broth (2 cups) – Adds richness and helps cook the pasta.
  • Elbow Macaroni (2 cups, uncooked) – The traditional pasta choice.
  • Worcestershire Sauce (1 tbsp) – Boosts umami flavor.
  • Italian Seasoning (1 tsp) – A perfect blend of herbs.
  • Paprika (1 tsp) – Gives a warm, slightly smoky taste.
  • Salt & Pepper (to taste) – Enhances all the flavors.
  • Cheddar Cheese (1 cup, shredded, optional) – Adds a cheesy touch.

Instructions

Step 1: Brown the Beef & Onion
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ground beef and onion, cooking until beef is browned and onions are soft (about 5 minutes). Drain excess grease if needed.

Step 2: Add Garlic & Seasonings
Stir in garlic, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 3: Add Tomatoes, Sauce & Broth
Pour in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

Step 4: Cook the Macaroni
Add the uncooked elbow macaroni, cover, and let simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender.

Step 5: Stir in Cheese (Optional)
If using cheese, stir in shredded cheddar until melted and creamy.

Step 6: Serve & Enjoy!
Ladle into bowls and enjoy hot, garnished with fresh parsley or extra cheese.

Notes

  • Don’t overcook the pasta – It will absorb liquid as it sits.
  • Make it spicier – Add red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Use a mix of beef & turkey – For a lighter version.
  • Add bell peppers – A classic addition for extra flavor and crunch.
