Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks, cut in half
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust based on your heat preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Nashville Hot Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce (such as Frank’s RedHot or your favorite brand)
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (add more for extra heat)
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cheese Sticks
    • Cut each mozzarella stick in half to make 24 smaller pieces.
    • Place them on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes. Freezing prevents the cheese from melting too quickly while frying.
  2. Set Up the Breading Station
    • In a bowl, add the flour.
    • In another bowl, whisk the eggs.
    • In a third bowl, combine the seasoned breadcrumbs, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Bread the Mozzarella Sticks
    • Dip each frozen mozzarella stick into the flour, then coat in the beaten eggs, and finally coat in the breadcrumb mixture.
    • For an extra crispy layer, dip the stick back into the egg and breadcrumb mixture for a second coating.
    • Return the breaded sticks to the freezer for 15-20 minutes to set.
  4. Fry or Air Fry the Mozzarella Sticks
    • Frying Method: Heat about 2 inches of oil in a pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the sticks in batches for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown.
    • Air Fryer Method: Preheat to 375°F (190°C). Spray the sticks with cooking oil and air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway.
  5. Make the Nashville Hot Sauce
    • In a bowl, whisk together the melted butter, hot sauce, cayenne pepper, brown sugar, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
  6. Coat the Mozzarella Sticks
    • Once fried, place the mozzarella sticks on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
    • Immediately brush or toss them in the hot sauce while they’re still warm.
  7. Serve and Enjoy
    • Serve the hot mozzarella sticks with ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping.

Notes

  • Freeze the Cheese: This step is crucial to prevent them from melting too quickly during frying.
  • Double Coat: A double layer of breading ensures maximum crunch.
  • Control the Heat: Adjust the cayenne and hot sauce to customize the spice level.
  • Work in Batches: Fry in small batches to maintain consistent oil temperature.
  • Prep Time: 20 minutes (plus freezing time)
  • Cook Time: 15 minutes
  • Cuisine: American
