Ingredients
Scale
For the Burger Steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef or chicken
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Mushroom Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (button, cremini, or your choice)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef or chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme or rosemary (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Burger Steaks
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into small patties, about 2-3 inches wide.
Step 2: Cook the Burger Steaks
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a drizzle of olive oil.
- Cook the burger steaks in batches for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Mushroom Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually pour in the broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
- Stir in the soy sauce, thyme (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
Step 4: Combine and Serve
- Return the cooked burger steaks to the skillet, spooning the mushroom gravy over them.
- Let everything simmer together for 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
- Serve hot with your favorite side dishes.
Notes
- Don’t Overmix: When forming the patties, mix the ingredients gently to keep the burgers tender.
- Deglaze the Pan: After cooking the patties, scrape up any browned bits in the skillet—they’ll add flavor to the gravy.
- Customize the Gravy: Add a splash of heavy cream for an even richer gravy or a pinch of paprika for a smoky twist.
