Ingredients
Scale
For the Donuts:
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup buttermilk (or plain yogurt)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons milk (or heavy cream)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Optional Toppings:
- Sprinkles, crushed nuts, shredded coconut, or chocolate shavings
Instructions
Prepare the Donut Batter
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined (do not overmix).
2. Fill the Donut Pan
- Spoon the batter into a piping bag or Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off.
- Pipe the batter into the donut cavities, filling them about ¾ full.
3. Bake the Donuts
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the donuts spring back when touched and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
4. Make the Chocolate Frosting
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and butter. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth.
- Stir in the milk, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar until you have a smooth, spreadable frosting. If it’s too thick, add a little more milk.
5. Frost the Donuts
- Dip the cooled donuts into the chocolate frosting, twisting slightly to coat evenly.
- Place them back on the wire rack and add any desired toppings (sprinkles, nuts, etc.) before the frosting sets.
Notes
- Don’t Overmix the Batter: Overmixing can lead to dense donuts. Mix until just combined.
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure the eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for the best texture.
- Customize the Toppings: From crushed Oreos to chopped nuts, feel free to get creative!
