Ingredients
For the Beef:
- 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cucumber, grated and squeezed to remove excess water
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon fresh dill or mint, chopped
- Salt, to taste
For Assembly:
- 4–6 pita breads, warmed
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded lettuce or arugula
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Marinate the Beef
- In a bowl, mix olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, oregano, cumin, paprika, coriander, salt, and pepper.
- Add the sliced beef and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours for more flavor).
Step 2: Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce
3. In another bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, dill (or mint), and a pinch of salt. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Step 3: Cook the Beef
4. Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the marinated beef in batches, 2-3 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
Step 4: Assemble the Gyros
5. Lay a warm pita bread on a flat surface. Spread a generous layer of tzatziki sauce on the bread.
6. Add a portion of cooked beef, then top with cherry tomatoes, red onion, shredded lettuce, and feta cheese (if using).
7. Fold the pita into a wrap and secure with foil or parchment paper for easy eating.
Notes
- Thinly Slice the Beef: For tender and flavorful meat, slice it thinly against the grain.
- Don’t Skip the Marinade: Letting the beef marinate enhances the flavor and ensures it stays juicy.
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh veggies and herbs make all the difference in this dish.
- Warm the Pita: Heat your pita bread slightly for better flexibility and flavor.
