Ingredients
- Large Onions (2, sliced into ½-inch rings) – Sweet or yellow onions work best.
- All-Purpose Flour (1 cup) – Forms the base of the batter.
- Cornstarch (¼ cup) – Helps create an extra crispy coating.
- Baking Powder (1 tsp) – Makes the batter light and airy.
- Salt (1 tsp) – Enhances the flavor.
- Black Pepper (½ tsp) – Adds a mild spice.
- Paprika (½ tsp, optional) – For extra flavor and color.
- Cold Sparkling Water or Milk (¾ cup) – Helps make a light, crisp batter.
- Egg (1 large, beaten) – Binds the batter.
- Breadcrumbs or Panko (1 cup, optional for extra crunch) – For a thicker, crunchier coating.
- Vegetable Oil (for frying, about 3 cups) – Neutral oil like canola or sunflower.
Instructions
Peel and slice the onions into ½-inch thick rings. Separate them and set aside.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Add the beaten egg and cold sparkling water (or milk) and whisk until smooth.
In a deep pan, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C).
Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off. If using breadcrumbs, dip the battered onion ring into the breadcrumbs for an extra crispy coating.
Carefully place the onion rings in the hot oil and fry for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan—fry in batches.
Remove onion rings with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Serve hot with ketchup, ranch, honey mustard, or a spicy aioli.
Notes
- Use cold ingredients: Cold sparkling water or milk makes the batter crispier.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan: Fry in small batches for even cooking.
- Use sweet onions: For the best flavor, try Vidalia or yellow onions.
- Keep them warm: Place fried onion rings on a wire rack in a 200°F (95°C) oven while finishing the rest.
