For the Shrimp:

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Orange Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch, mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)

Garnish:

  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • Chopped green onions
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Shrimp

  1. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Set up a breading station: In one bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. In a second bowl, beat the eggs.

Step 2: Bread the Shrimp

  1. Dip each shrimp in the flour mixture, then into the beaten eggs, and back into the flour mixture, pressing gently to coat evenly.

Step 3: Fry the Shrimp

  1. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Step 4: Make the Orange Sauce

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together orange juice, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, and garlic.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then add the cornstarch slurry. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 5: Combine and Serve

  1. Toss the fried shrimp in the orange sauce until evenly coated.
  2. Garnish with orange zest, green onions, and sesame seeds. Serve immediately over rice or noodles.

  • Dry the Shrimp: Ensuring the shrimp are dry helps the coating stick better.
