Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chunks (optional): For extra gooeyness.

For the Milkshake Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 23 tablespoons milk: Adjust for desired consistency.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles or mini chocolate chips (optional): For decoration.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.

Step 2: Bake the Cookies
7. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers look slightly underbaked (they will firm up as they cool).
9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 3: Make the Frosting
10. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
11. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons of milk. Beat until smooth and fluffy. Add more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, if needed, to reach your desired consistency.

Step 4: Decorate the Cookies
12. Spread or pipe the frosting onto the cooled cookies.
13. Garnish with sprinkles or mini chocolate chips for a fun finishing touch.

Notes

  • Don’t Overbake: Slightly underbaking ensures soft, chewy cookies.
  • Sift Your Cocoa Powder: This helps prevent lumps in both the dough and frosting.
  • Chill the Dough: If the dough feels sticky, refrigerate for 15-20 minutes before baking.
  • Customize the Frosting: Add a touch of malted milk powder for an authentic milkshake flavor.
