Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of sturdy bread (sourdough or ciabatta work best)
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 4 oz gouda cheese, thinly sliced
- 1 medium apple (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
- 1 cup cooked shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- A pinch of salt and pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Ingredients
- Slice the bread, cheese, apple, and shrimp into desired sizes for layering.
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
Step 2: Assemble the Sandwiches
- Lay the bread slices butter-side down.
- Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side (optional for extra flavor).
- Layer the gouda slices, apple slices, and chopped shrimp evenly between two slices of bread.
- Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
Step 3: Cook the Sandwiches
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on one side, pressing gently with a spatula to help the cheese melt.
- Flip carefully and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool slightly.
- Slice in half and serve warm with your favorite side, such as a crisp salad or soup.
Notes
- Choose Fresh Ingredients: Crisp apples and fresh shrimp make all the difference.
- Use Quality Bread: A sturdy bread holds up well to the hearty filling.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Cook one or two sandwiches at a time for even toasting.
- Customize the Cheese: Try Havarti, Brie, or Fontina if Gouda isn’t your favorite.
