Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of sturdy bread (sourdough or ciabatta work best)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 oz gouda cheese, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium apple (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 1 cup cooked shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • A pinch of salt and pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Ingredients

  1. Slice the bread, cheese, apple, and shrimp into desired sizes for layering.
  2. Butter one side of each bread slice.

Step 2: Assemble the Sandwiches

  1. Lay the bread slices butter-side down.
  2. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side (optional for extra flavor).
  3. Layer the gouda slices, apple slices, and chopped shrimp evenly between two slices of bread.
  4. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.

Step 3: Cook the Sandwiches

  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on one side, pressing gently with a spatula to help the cheese melt.
  3. Flip carefully and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool slightly.
  2. Slice in half and serve warm with your favorite side, such as a crisp salad or soup.

Notes

  • Choose Fresh Ingredients: Crisp apples and fresh shrimp make all the difference.
  • Use Quality Bread: A sturdy bread holds up well to the hearty filling.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Cook one or two sandwiches at a time for even toasting.
  • Customize the Cheese: Try Havarti, Brie, or Fontina if Gouda isn’t your favorite.
